Vegetarian Chilli Seitan (Vegan meat)

This recipe is made with wheat protein called Seitan (popular as vegan meat), Seitan is used as imitation meat in vegan restaurants. Seitan is made with Vital Wheat Gluten (Wheat Protein). Here I am making chilli chicken style vegan version by using Seitan as substitute, so it might look like meat but no worries.

Ingredients:

Unflavored Seitan - 70g
Unflavored Soy protein - 5g
• Liquid Egg Whites - 2 tsp (Optional)
• Soy Sauce - 1 Tbsp;
• Sriracha - 1/2 tsp
• Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
• Black pepper - 1/8 tsp
• Light salt (to the taste)
• Olive/Grape seed oil - 1.5 tsp
• Veggies (Bell peppers, onions, green Onions, curry leaves, cilantro, green chillies)
• Minced Ginger & Garlic - 2 tsp
• Chilli powder 1/4 tsp
• Apple Cider Vinergar - 1 tsp (or Squeeze of lemon)
Walden Farms All Zero Ketchup - 1 tsp.

Preparation:

  1. This recipes is 2 step process, 1st we need to marinate seitan and then saute. For marinating you need following ingredients shown in below picture. Weigh 70g of seitan, 5g of soy protein.
  2. For marinating, take a small mixing bowl place seitan and 1/2 tsp sriracha, 1 tsp soy sauce, optional 1-2 tsp egg whites and unflavored soy protein and mix well together.
  3. Place a wok on stove and shallow fry marinated seitan with 1 tsp of oil as shown below and transfer to a bowl.
  4. Now we need to saute and season shallow fried seitan. For that you need following spices and veggies (Bell peppers are optional).
  5. Place a wok on stove and turn on high heat and add 1/2 tsp of oil, once heated add minced ginger garlic and curry leaves and stir together for 1/2 min and add chillies then bell peppers and stir for 1/2 min and make a place in middle for sauces. Add apple cider vineger, ketchup, chilli powder and stir together then add shallow fried seitan and stir for 1 min and TURN OFF THE HEAT before adding onions.
  6. Now add Onions, green onions and cilatro and stir together and transfer to serving plate.
  7. Here is mouth watering Vegetarian Chilli Seitan (Vegan meat) is ready. This can be complete meal for lunch/dinner by adding additional vegetables on side.
